House of Dior Suspends Galliano

by: Melissa Laborie

John Galliano was prepared to present his upcoming collection for the Dior house for Paris Fashion Week; alas it looks like he won't be in attendance. Living in a time where celebrities feel like there actions do not deserve any consequences, it is interesting to see Dior take a hard line and suspend their creative designer.

According to many reports, Galliano was arrested for using anti-Semitic slurs towards a couple at the Parisian bar La Perle earlier this week. There have been different opinions on how this altercation started, I have heard everything from he was drinking and went up to the couple to the couple insulted him and he retaliated. Regardless, action has been taken.

Dior affirms with the utmost conviction its policy of zero tolerance towards any anti-Semitic or racist words or behavior,” Dior chief executive Sidney Toledano said in a statement. “Pending the results of the inquiry, Christian Dior has suspended John Galliano from his responsibilities.”

Galliano has been creative designer for the House of Dior since 1996.

He is still set to show his John Galliano fall-winter collection on March 6.

How do you think this will affect the showing of Dior's Fall-Winter 2012 collection? Do you think the House will reinstate Galliano?

There's No Stopping Her...Rachel Zoe Reveals New Fashion Line

On days when I am feeling overwhelmed with my hectic and somewhat crazy schedule, I think to myself "WWZD?" In other words, What Would Zoe Do?

As one of the most famous American celebrity stylists, star of the reality show The Rachel Zoe Project, author of Style: A to Zoe, and so much more, Rachel Zoe is one busy woman. Even at 7 months pregnant, Zoe manages to put most of us to shame with her heavy workload. To add insult to injury, she looks fabulous while doing it.

Not one to be slowed down by pregnancy, the superstar stylist has been busy working on her first line, The Rachel Zoe Collection. According to WWD, the collection is "pure Zoe-tailored: dramatic with a 70s flare." However Zoe says "I'd imagine everybody is expecting something from me that's kind of a 70s, uberboho-glam kind of thing and very accessorized. And it's not." So what can we expect then?

The collection reportedly includes a lot of suiting, a le smoking-esque tuxedo jumpsuit, capes for outerwear, and four inch high stilettos with massive platforms. Unlike her affordable collection for QVC, prices for The Rachel Zoe Collection will range from $250 for a day dress to $700 for a full tuxedo look.

The collection will hit stores in the fall, although no retailers have been secured as of yet. What can we expect in the meantime from this busy mother-to-be? Plenty it seems, despite being told to slow down by doctors. Her Bravo series will capture the development of the collection from start to finish and she will be seen by Anne Hathaway's side at the Oscars to help with outfit changes, eight months pregnant and in four inch heels undoubtedly.

Talk about an inspiration to get moving...or a way to make me feel bad about my apparent laziness! Check out her upcoming collection below

McQueen Exhibition Launching May 2nd

by Melissa Laborie

With the passing of one of fashions most creative and daring designers last year there was much talk about what would happen with the continuation of Alexander McQueen's line. Sarah Burton has been named as his predecessor, yet it is still unknown if his artistic genius will be seen in the collections. Luckily, the fashion and art fans
will now have a chance to view some of his genius at the newly announced exhibition for the Met's Costume Institute Gala.

Anna Wintour and Sam Cam launched the unveiling of the exhibition at the Ritz on February 22, 2001 for members of the London Press. The perfect location for such an event as McQueen showed his first collection at the Ritz with Isabella Blow in 1992.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty will focus on 100 of his creations starting with his Angles and Demons collection up until his final posthumous 2010 Pomp and Circumstance collection. The exhibition will surely feature fan favourites including my personal fave: The Widows of Culloden, a luxurious and romantic line pulling
inspiration from his previous name-making Highland Rape line with a focus on tartan.

"McQueen's work fits easily in the discourse of art. He can be considered no less than a great artist" said Thomas P Campbell, director of the Met.

For all you McQueen fans, the exhibition will run from May 4th to July 31 - book your NYC trip now!

Shoedreams

By Erin Powers

With my favourite season fast approaching I can't help but start to daydream of sangria with girlfreinds on a patio, shopping on sunny afternoons and hitting the town on hot summer nights. When I find myself longing for warmer weather my mind automatically shifts to the fabulous summer shoes I hope to be wearing for the season (doesn't everyone shoedream? No? Just me then, sigh). Here's a few fabulous pieces of footwear that I can't get out of my "shoedreams".

Now I must admit I have always loved a wedge. What's not to love, all the benefits of a heel with the comfort of a flat, and every summer I find myself purchasing at least two new pairs to add to my collection (yes I know, excessive). This season I am coveting the YSL puzzle wedge (pictured right). It's architectural and the nude colour is another of my current shoe obsessions. DVF also came out with a wedge that got my attention, the Opal wedge (pictured left). They have a simple silhouette and I keep envisioning these wonderful shoes with a breezy maxi dress and bangles. Ahhh summer.

Another shoe trend that keeps showing up this season is the an
kle strap. Thin, thick, embellished, I can't seem to kick this trend
out of my shoedreams. One of my favourite ankle strap shoes comes from my favourite shoe artist - Brian Atwood. His "Collins" shoe (pictured right) in antique rose suede with the buckle detail on the ankle strap is the perfect mix of masculine and feminine, and a shoe I am definitely hoping to add to my collection (or at least a cheaper imitation, shhhh don't tell). The shoe of the season for me though has to be the Jimmy Choo Caitlin (pictured left). I especially love the coral colour and the double ankle strap is the perfect combination of trendy and classic. This shoe can take you from patio sangrias (clearly a summertime favourite) to a night on the town, and will add a touch of glamour to any outfit.

So here's to summer, sun and amazing shoes.

Happy Shoedreams!

SEXY|SENSUAL|STYLE

Romance is definitely dominating the trends of next seasons. Lace is both beautiful and flirty, but it is also romantic, feminine and totally chic. All depends on how you wear it. It is great to see lace is a hot fashion trend for Spring/Summer 2011. But be cautious fashionistas because if you overdue this textile or wear it incorrectly you can wind up looking a bit foolish or Barbie-like; not exactly a sought after

look.

Experimenting with the upcoming fashion trends can be both fun challenging, however fortunately some of the time-tested trend are repeatedly re-invented and enriched with additional designs and design inventions. Lace has withstood the times, and it is gorgeous. It looks exceptionally good combined with other fabrics or just on its own. Some pieces are entirely made of lace, others have tempting lace insets. You can go for vintage lace with large prints and look classy or opt for tiny patterns for a more sensual look. It’s you who

can choose what to wear though. The number of versions is huge.

Those who are fond of the sensuous and dainty textures should try their hand at the Spring/Summer 2011 lace fashion trend; from cocktail dresses, to casual t-shirts and even sorts and pants, lace can help make a style statement. Jump on the bandwagon and get into the lacy groove!

F**k You! NY Fashion Week!

By: Beverly Garvida

One of the biggest events in the fashion world just passed—New York Fashion Week that is! As I was looking through pictures online, there was one picture that stood out from the rest. Ashanti’s leopard print Garcelle Beauvais dress did not make the headline but her self-expressive shoes —F**k You! open-toed pumps with a single heel temperament a hulk decal of a lady giving the finger. I know it is very controversial but so clever! This is definitely one of those ‘turning something negative into positive’ moments but though fashion. Creativity at its flipping best. Being a shoe-aholic myself, this definitely piqued my interest and curiousity so I asked myself which designer would be bold enough to create this? None other than Italian shoe designer Massimo Dogana. Yes that was my second question. Who the heck is he? He is known for his flashy pieces for women’s shoes. I love his latest F**k You! boots, very stunning and exquisite in their aesthetic. Ok I’m not going to pretend I’ve heard of him before I saw these shoes. Before him, when it comes to customizing high end distinctive unique shoe designs, my shoe vocabulary only contained my favourites—Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik and Giuseppe Zanotti . And now it will be my pleasure to add Massimo Dogana in my top five list. Shame on me for not knowing who he was. Mr. Dogana please forgive me! I want a pair for my collection.

Zoe-Fabulous!

By: Beverly Garvida
No A-lister wants to be known as a fashion victim in the latest issue of fashion magazines or be ridiculed about by TMZ or get picked on by Perez Hilton. So when it comes to the most up to date and coveted style, who do they all go to? Rachel Zoe. (Obviously) she is so major! When blockbuster superstars like Cameron Diaz & Anne Hathaway; amongst her biggest clients, demand her to style them for award shows and events, you know she’s a big deal. I first fell in love with her after watching an episode of “The Rachel Zoe Project” on YouTube and I've been hooked ever since. Its been love at first sight. I even follow her on Twitter. As groupie-like as it might sound, you can’t deny her extraordinary talent. She is the ultimate vintage fashion queen! I absolutely adore her. Her sense of style & eye for fashion is out of this world. I don’t know how she creates these brilliant style ideas all the time and manage to grace the Best Dressed List sections. So I’ve always wondered that if she can style and put together the best wardrobes, then creating her own designs herself would be as natural as breathing air. And she did just that! When I found out just days ago “I diee” (as she would say it when she gets excited about something). The uber-prego A-list stylist just launched The Rachel Zoe Collection. Everyone is buzzing about it that Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom, and Intermix didn’t waste any time to scoop up the collection. I have seen them myself and it makes me want go out there and buy every single piece. They are to die for! The collection spells one word and that’s glamourous. Considering the hype surrounding it, guaranteed an instant sell-out!

Tim Gunn Bans Snooki and Teen Mom

And now for further proof that Tim Gunn is a true genius and can do no wrong, like I ever had any doubts, he has officially refused to work with the likes of Snooki and MTV reality TV star Amber Portwood of Teen Mom. "We're not dressing Snooki, we're not doing any of that stuff," he told StyleList about the upcoming season of Project Runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Despite the show's regular use of guest celebrities, who in the past have included Nicole Ritchie, Victoria Beckham, and Sarah Jessica Parker, Gunn said that he would refuse to make it work with both of the reality TV show stars.

"I will throw down the gauntlet," he said defiantly. "I do nothing that mitigates bad behaviour, I want an end to it."

For those of you who, like me, are sick of the fist-pumping, the boozing, the chest baring, and the underage pregnancies and drama, Gunn's comment brings a sigh of relief. They are everywhere it seems, do they really have to infiltrate the fashion world as well? For now the answer appears to be a resounding "no" and thank goodness... as far as I'm concerned Jersey Shore fashion should be left on the Jersey Shore.

Bejewelled Ed Hardy and leopard mini dresses? No thank-you!

POSHBOUTIN

By: Patrick Jason Calara
To be completely honest, I hardly look at women’s fashion. But when it comes to Victoria Beckham, I follow her religiously. There's just something about her and her style. It’s very simple yet tastefully satisfying. Although Baby Spice was my favorite Spice Girl, Posh has grown on me over the years. And lets face it, how can you deny a woman who's married to David Beckham aka one of the hottest men alive?
From controversy and the media picking on her skinny thin figure and breast implants to rumors of hubby David having an affair we haven’t really seen a lot from the Posh these days. She also hasn’t been sitting front row at fashion shows as often as she has in the past. Why has she been missing in action? It’s because she’s focused on her own fashion line, Victoria Beckham. When she's not being photographed, she’s designing dresses, sunglasses, handbags and more recently, shoes. That’s right! Victoria Beckham has teamed up with the famous shoe designer Christian Louboutin. The shoes were featured in her fall 2011 collection during New York fashion week. The deep burgundy booties and knee-high boots she designed looked amazing and complemented her autumn bright dresses. I’m sure the shoes will cost a fortune but if you can afford them then why not?

Want to work for Marc Jacobs? Tweet it!

by Tara Chang

If this doesn’t convince anyone that having a twitter account is an essential part of life, you probably don’t deserve a computer. An announcement has been made via twitter that Marc Jacobs is looking to hire someone to take on the company’s twitter account and social media. Don’t have your resume and cover letter updated? No problem! The company is choosing to hire over twitter by asking twitterers to post a clever tweet.

“Be clever. Smart. Understand our DNA. Say it in one tweet! That is your interview!” says the tweet.

This is no joke people! Twitter is sure proving to be a must-have in this industry, now you just have to prove it in 140 characters.

Summer Love

by Derek Dotto

I’m in love! It may be a day late, but I’m making my Valentine’s Day declaration. I’ve found the one, well the ones, I should say. There are two of them. They’re stylish, Italian, and oh so sweet. Their names: Righty and Lefty, and they make up the perfect pair of summer shoes.

The RAI is the stand out in John Fluevog’s fabulous Spring 2011 collection. The two-toned loafer is the latest addition to Fluevog’s Radio family, a group of shoes named after public broadcast radio stations around the world. Available in black and brown, the RAI has enough Italian style and vintage flare to live up to its namesake, Radio Audiziono Italiane.

I can’t wait to stomp around town in these bad boys, without socks, pants rolled up.

That's it? Your Done?

By Erin Powers

Like the gunshot that starts an Olympic race, I have come to think of my alarm clock as the gunshot that starts my personal daily marathon. Like all other busy people I have caught myself one too many time thinking that there aren't more hours in the day, and so as the old saying goes - something's gotta give. For me the something comes in the form of regular manicures, watching TV and sleep. That is until this weekend.

I arrived at the airport this weekend to learn that my flight was going to be delayed by at least an hour, so I decided to wander around the terminal of Toronto Airport to pass some time. I hadn't wandered far when I came across something that made me pause in disbelief - 10 minute manicures! Pardon me, 10 minutes? Thats it? No way! So I did what any other sceptic would do - I ponied up to the nail bar. A young girl, with great hair I might add, seated me at her station and immediately started work on buffing anf polishing my nails to perfection. As we talked I remember thinking to myself "She's fast, but this has to take longer than 10 minutes", but my manicure fairy proved me wrong. Now in 10 minutes I might not be able to catch up on my sleep, or the newest episode of Glee but I can get fabulous cherry red nails!

Now for all of you out there thinking "sure 10 minutes is great, but not if I have to go to the airport" 10 minute manicures has multiple locations to choose from, as well as products you can have delivered right to your home. For more information head to http://www.10minutemanicure.com/index.html . Also, be sure to check out 10 Minute Manicures other services for those oh so precious days when you have more than 10 extra minutes.

Happy Manicures!

Grammy 2011 Trends: Glitter Ruffles & Jungle Safari

by Natalie Kushnir

So there’s been a lot of talk about the Grammys the past couple of days, best performances, opinions on awards, best and worst dressed, I can go on... but what caught my eye were the trending themes on the red carpet.

Grammy 2011 Fashion Trends: Glitter, Ruffles and Jungle Safari

Sequins, glitter, glam & shine.

From J Lo’s rockin’ shard and studded silver Emilio Pucci, Heidi Klum perfect as a princess in Julien MacDonald, to Katy Perry’s jewel pierced Armani bra, the red carpet didn’t miss a shine. Oh, and how could I forget to mention Hayley William’s in her Jeremy Scott black sequin and pink feather puff.

Ruffles for a lifetime.

Fashion statement or fashion mistake? Ruffles are hard to pull off, yet a variety of celebs still tried...Rihanna in a Gaultier dress, white ruffles head to toe. My opinion, she should have worn her performance outfit from Love the way you lie. Nicole Kidman turned Jean Paul Gaultier’s ruffles around in her floral strapless dress.

Leopard and Eggs.

Animal print is a classic, especially leopard print. But too much, could be bad, and Nicki Minaj turned this classic bad. Head to toe in Givenchy leopard print failed to impress for 2011. And Gaga’s egg...avant-garde gone wrong. As for Miley Cyrus, at least one kept up the status of animal print. Her Cavalli neutral toned sparkling dress caught at least my eyes!

Now the fun part...wait and see what designs get mocked and sold in retail stores for consumers like me and you! Get excited for Spring / Summer 2011!

The Evolution of The Corset

By Salma Moustafa

The corset has certainly evolved throughout fashion history. Most commonly worn in the mid-1800s, the corset was considered a medical necessity. It was believed that a woman was very fragile and needed assistance from some form of stay to hold her up. It wasn't until the Victorian Era in the 19th century, that the widespread use of the corset emerged. Recurring changes of female shapes, mainly to the waist being enhanced or concealed led to the disappearance and reappearance of the corset in 20th century fashion.

During the Art Deco period in the 1920's, dresses were more flat and square with less emphasis on the waist. Corsets disappeared for a while. However, in the 1940's, "The New Look" created by Christian Dior placed emphasis on the waist, once again, bringing the corset back but this time turning it into a bustier.

In the 1970's, Vivienne Westwood becomes the first designer of the 20th century to use corset in its original form which led to designers Jean-Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler following in her path in the 1980's.

Madonna wears one of Jean-Paul Gaultier's corsets in her world tour in the 1990's making her the first woman to wear them as outerwear.A fashion trend commences.

And now with the increasing trend of curvy women, a niche has emerged with some craving the need of curves once again.Once considered a medical necessity, the corset has now become a form of liberation and sexual empowerment for women everywhere, translating the corset from a garmet worn as innerwear to one that can be worn as outerwear.

Cooper It's Cold Outside!

By Erin Powers

I'm not sure about everyone else out there but the weather here in good ol' T.O. has had me less than thrilled to go outside lately. As much as I love the outdoors I have to admit that I'm definitely more of a beach bum than ski bunny, and the thought of layering on all those pieces of clunky winter protection just to take Cooper (my Shih Tzu, and love of my life) out for a walk leaves me feeling slightly underwhelmed at the beauty of the season. So in order to make this daily task as enjoyable as possible in -25 degree weather, I have tried to ensure that my "clunky winter protection" is as stylish as possible.

My first line of defense is always a great pair of boots. Cooper loves to go ploughing through 2 foot high piles of snow, and since he is just a little guy, I inevitably end up in the snow pile digging him out. This year I got my hands on a pair of Rachel boots ($235.00) by the canadian company Pajar and my feet have been thanking me ever since. They stay dry and warm during our snowy adventures which is more than I can say for Cooper. For a full list of retailers carrying these boots head to http://www.pajar.com/en/store+locator

My second weapon in my battle against the cold is my Lululemon Pinnacle jacket ($298.00). It is the warmest jacket I have ever put on and the belt ensures that I dont look like the abominable snowman. The hood is big enough to fit over my winter hat, but still stays on during windy days,. Go to www.lululemon.ca for more details on availability at stores near you.

The last thing I never leave the house without is an extra warm scarf, in a bright colour to remind me that spring is (according to Wiarton Willy) just around the corner. Kenneth Cole does a really warm and soft cashmere blend pashmina that comes in six great colours ($69.98). To find a retailer near you carrying these pashminas go to www.kennethcole.com and click Find A Store, or you can save some time (and not have to go outside - Bonus!) and order directly from the website.

Lastly, since I have been chattering on about my cold weather ordnances, I certainly do not send my adorable little dog out into the elements unprotected. He is a small dog with a huge heart and I thought he should have a jacket that shows everyone just how tough little dogs can be. I bought this little security jacket at Pink Paw in Yorkdale, for more information go to
www.thepinkpaw.com

Happy Shopping!

THE NEW CARRIE?

Producer extraordinaire, Michael Patrick King is keen on bringing another one of Candace Bushnell’s best sellers to the big screen. With the original ladies of Sex and the City primarily preoccupied with marriage, motherhood and menopause claims have been made that the film will star none other than Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively.

Rumors have been circulating that the star will play the young Carrie in a Sex and the City prequel based on Candice Bushnell's novels The Carrie diaries and Summer in the City; featuring her trials and tribulations in high school and explore 19 year old Bradshaw’s first few months in NYC.

Is Blake Lively ready to walk a mile in the Manolos of one of the most iconic fashionistas? Although Lively's agent could not be reached for official comment, reports thus far have been denied. According to the New York Post, King is considering making another film with Blake Lively cast in the star role.

U.S. Retailers Heading North

by Joseph Fabian

Many Canadians every day go across the U.S. border empty-handed and comes back with tons of suitcases full of clothes. It’s about time that U.S. retailers expand to Canada so that people won’t be sneaking in clothing, purses or accessories through the customs.

As we all know this expansion already started with stores like Juicy Couture, Bath and Body Works and Victoria Secrets. Five additional stores are on their way. These are

1) Target – A one stop shop discount retail store that carries hard and soft goods as well as groceries, mostly non-perishable. As a popular on-the-run retail store, it also carries clothing, shoes, jewelry, health and beauty products, electronics and other various types of media, bedding, kitchen supplies, sporting goods, toys, pet supplies, automotive supplies, hardware supplies and seasonal merchandise. You name it, they have it.

2) Marshalls – Another discount retail store, however is more similar to Winners(?), which offers current-season, brand-name and designer goods for men, women, teens and kids at incredible prices every day.

3) J. Crew – A clothing retail store that offers upscale fashion with complete assortments of women's, men's and children's apparel and accessories, their goods include wedding wear, swimwear, loungewear, outerwear, shoes, bags, belts, hair accessories and jewelry.

4) ExpressAnother popular retail store well-known for its must-have sexy, sophisticated clothing and unique fashion. Express is aimed towards young fashion-forward women and men who dress for work, the weekend or casual outings.

5) Justice A retail clothing store for girls ages 7-14. Justice features the very latest in girls clothing and preteen fashion accessories, including tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear at a value price.

Now that U.S. retailers are coming to Canada, Canadians should not have to spend money to fill up on gas in order to drive south of the border just to go shopping. With these brand-name retail stores on their way to Canada, it may finally help Canada’s economy to fully recover from the recession and open new job opportunities in the retail industry.

Who is going to Tumblr in next?

by Tara Chang

Watch out Twitter! There is a new fashion-following in social media tumbling their way into town.

For those who don’t know, Tumblr is a blogging platform that allows users to customize their tumblelog effortlessly by posting text, images, videos, quotes and links directly from your browser, phone or email. The “reblog” button allows users to repost content they wish to share and has a greater chance of going viral.

So how popular will Tumblr become?

This is an image-heavy social media platform and has recently reported that 180 of the top 1,000 blogs are fashion related. Because of this, more and more fashion brands have been joining Tumblr in order to increase their reach.

Oscar de la Renta and Kate Spade are a few of the recent fashion brands to enter the Tumblr world, allowing users to view candid images of the designers and specific pieces from their labels.

I am thinking Tumblr may have potential to become the next high-tech medium for up to the minute fashion hits and news. Which fashion brand will Tumblr in next?

Lady Gaga Gets Naked for Supreme

by Derek Dotto

Supreme has always been a label that I’ve never been cool enough to wear, straight up. Born on the streets of Manhattan in 1994, the brand has become eponymous with NYC skate culture and has maintained a cult following of those in-the-know about street style.

This week, Purple Fashion Magazine released a spread starring Lady Gaga sporting Supreme duds, a move that is sure to launch the label’s mainstream exposure into the stratosphere. The shots were taken by legendary photog Terry Richardson, while Gaga’s stylist, Nicola Formichetti, served as the shoot’s fashion director. The pics are minimal in set and, well, clothes. One shot features her royal fabness in nothing more than platform pumps, with a Supreme skateboard covering her lady parts.

The shots have already gone viral, exposing thousands of people to Supreme, much to the chagrin of the brand’s loyal fans. In Toronto, Supreme is available only at Nomad located on Richmond St. near Spadina Ave. Apparently, and this is second hand news to me so don't quote me on it, the Supreme rep has been apprehensive about bringing the skate brand to Nomad’s new Queen St. location because it will become over exposed. Thanks to Lady Gaga, I say it's too late for that.

Check out the shots below to see more, and I mean a lot more, of Gaga for Supreme.
