LINK UP WITH LINKED IN

By Emma Tynan

There is that weird come down time between the last day of school and the moment you realize thats its actually really finished, OSAP is not coming, your parents won't help you out anymore and yes... You need a job ASAP. It's crazy at how many job search sites and recruitment agencies there are at our finger tips and it can become very confusing.

This is why I like Linkedin, this is a social network geared towards helping you network in your field as well as giving you an opportunity to browse job postings. Linkedin is as easy as signing up to Facebook and you are able link your other social media accounts to it, it offers you a space to put your CV, discuss your industry in designated groups and post updates about yourself. Based on your information, the groups you join and the people you link yourself too Linkedin  generates a daily newspaper called Linkedin Today with daily article pertaining to your professional interests.

If you are looking for a job and are confused about where to look, start by uploading your CV to linkedin and just see who you can meet and where it takes you!

Tips for Using Linkedin

  • Users with complete profiles are more likely to receive opportunities through LinkedIn.
  • Use the address book importer to import your address book directly from web-based email clients such as Gmail or Yahoo! Mail, or use the Outlook address book importer.
  • Get recommended and have a strong network, it builds your professional credibility and helps you get hired.
  • Use LinkedIn is to research your recruiters or interviewers. You can learn more about their background to have an edge over the other candidates.
  • Answer LinkedIn Expertise questions in your field. The more points of expertise you gain, the higher you appear on lists of experts.
  • Use the Job Insider toolbar, these inside connections can help you through informational interviews or by introducing you directly to the hiring manager. Because it automatically shows you who of your contacts are affiliated with someone in the company or to do with that position.

As fashion people we often discuss what is appropriate and acceptable in society in regards to how we dress. We focus on body type, colouring, age and lifestyle in our conversations about how we and others fit into our society and other cultures. Personality also has a huge influence on how we dress, some of us like to believe that many of our personality traits come from our astrological signs. Next time you are out and about see if you can tell someones sun sign by how they like to dress...

ARIES
March 21st – April 20th

DESIGN AND CONQUOR – The Aries girl just has to have that  ~ insert latest “it” item here ~ She doesn’t care if you got it first hers will be longer, brighter, more expensive and have a label. This girl creates her looks around a theme whether its “Disco Diva” or “Sassy school girl” she pulls off her personal style with a touch of class regardless of its gaudiness. Remember the time she saw that sparkly, patent, swirly patterned, glow in the dark jumpsuit? Aries girl bought it on the spot and was wearing it out the very same night! How does she do it!

FABRICS – Wool, Leather, Technical Nylons

TAURUS

April 20th – May 21st

BULL IN A BOUTIQUE – Our Taurus girl likes her items tried, tested and true. Comfortable and practical, she likes her jeans, blouses and belts with a great pair of shoes. When Taurus finds something that suits her and she likes, she will purchase tons of it. If you ever happen upon a Taurean girls closet you will find rows and rows of the same styles and cuts in various colours. Although even the colours are not that varied example a gorgeous strapless A-line sundress, great for the figure cotton poly mix x 4 in Solid black, black and white floral, solid leaf green and white and green floral. The only time this girl will go a little loopy is in an accessories boutique, she has no problem piling on the necklaces – just a problem pulling them apart when they get tangled!

FABRICS – Cashmere, Silk, Cotton

GEMINI

May 21st – June 22nd

THE GIRL OF A 1000 FACES – This energetic girl loves to play dress up and is on the pulse of everything! Gemini’s outfits for a single day could look like this: Morning run: Flash dance with leggings, cropped hoodie and sweet bands. Work at office: Katherine Hepburn style pantsuit. Dinner with boyfriend: Spanish style a-symmetrical sundress finished with a flower. Night out with the girls: Leather mini dress in Cobalt blue with 15 silver bangles up one arm. This is just one day! Gemini’s closet looks like a colourful explosion of historical and new worlds, past, present and future!

FABRICS – Poplin, Suede, Lurex

CANCER
June 22 – July 23rd

SIMPLY LADY LIKE – It won’t come as a shock that Lady Diana, Princess of Wales was a Cancer, these women never get bored of a crisp white blouse or a twin-set and pearls… For the cancer girl white is definitely not Vanilla, she can make the most clean cut tank top paired with jeans look sexy in that girl next door, I’d like meet kind of way. Lingerie has a huge place in her wardrobe, with peek-a-boo cami’s under delicate blouses and almost negligee style dresses completed with a pashmina cancer is lady like all the way!

FABRICS – Satin, Lace, Gabardine

LEO
July 23rd – August 22nd

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL – Once a true Leo has finished gazing at her self in the mirror for at least an hour or so all drama will break loose! This girl love, love LOVES her red in all shades, as bags, dresses, coats, shoes, jewelry you name it she has it! This lioness is sizzling hot and on her game once she has her costume on! When not in red the Leo woman enjoys a little gender bending with a mans white dress shirt and loose jeans or a slick black tuxedo suit with a fantabulous pair of boots… If you look hard enough though I am pretty sure you will find the glimmer of a red bra or a red sole of a shoe peeking through somewhere!

FABRICS – PVC, Cotton, Denim

VIRGO
August 22nd – September 22nd

TAILORED TO THE TEE – Regardless of the age or style of her attire you will never see a fray, stain or loose thread, she will be neatly pressed and very polished… Virgo is a perfectionist. This lady’s closet is all about texture, cut, trim, silhouette, pattern, lining and quality. Virgo likes a classic almost mod simplicity to her clothes; she favours mules over pumps and likes the clinical look of sterling silver jewelry. Speaking of clinical don’t ever be surprised if you see a Virgo lady pairing up a little black dress with a pair of white gloves!

FABRICS – Chiffon, Wool Crepe, Boucle

LIBRA
September 22nd – October 23rd

WEAR THE RIGHT THING – Libra is all about the appropriate attire, this sometimes can pose as problem as she doesn’t always understand what the appropriate attire is. For example – A dinner at an upscale restaurant with her employer, who tells her it’s a casual affair. Libra will pick out the word "casual" and show up in Jeans and converse OR she will pick out the word "upscale" and show up in an evening gown. Luckily for Libra she always likes to feel pretty and feminine so somehow manages to pull it off with a shabby chic sort of feel. So the converse and Jeans will be finished with a beautiful silk blouse and a slouchy blazer with a crochet and pearl clutch. The evening gown will be an airy chiffon with braided straps and a braided belt finished with pretty kitten heels and little cardigan.

FABRICS – Crochet, Linen, Crushed Organza

SCORPIO
October 23rd – November 22nd

HOLD TIGHT – Everybody knows that a Scorpio holds things and people  very tight in all senses of the word… Well the same goes for her style, regardless of body type Scorpio likes her clothes tight and fitted, the closer a dress hugs the body the better, just as well most of our Scorpio girls have gorgeous derrieres and a beautiful décolletage to match! Scorpio is the kind of girl who finds a key item and will wear it everywhere with everything, like those thigh high leather studded boots she bought last week are great for wearing to the office on a Monday morning, then running out to do the groceries AND pick the kids up from school in… The thing is Scorpio will carry the look, be fabulous doing it and no one will even batter an eyelid!

FABRICS – Spandex, Cotton Stretch, Acetate

SAGITTARIUS
November 22nd – December 22nd

WHATS OLD IS NEW – The Sag girl is known for her eclectic taste and of love style through out the ages. Her closet looks like she raided her Grandmothers MOTHERS closet… Even with new purchases, the way she puts things together always has a feel from a different era be it the 20s, 40s, 50s or 60s. The sag girl isn’t really a label whore; if it is interesting and well made she will buy it or take it off your hands. This positive thinker is big on purging and giving items to dear friends and relatives, the funny things is these items after years end up back in her possession and she is more than happy to re-style them and wear them again.

FABRICS – Velvet, Rayon, Jersey

CAPRICORN
December 22nd – January 21st

A HOOF IN EVERY COLOUR – Capricorn loves shoes, her collection is from all over the world at all different price points, for all different occasions and out of many fabrics. Capricorn is more likely to choose her shoes before she will choose her outfit and will shop in exactly the same manner. You’ll often hear her say something like “I have this party to go to, I found the most amazing pumps but I can’t find a dress to go with them”. I know one Capricorn in particular who had a court appointment, she was wearing a fantastic suit with what looked like 17th century court shoes that had rather shapely heels and tied up with big bows! She insisted they were court shoes and historically speaking they were. When not fawning over shoes our Cap tends to have a sophisticated and take charge look about her just like her personality.

FABRIC – Poly Cotton, Silk Taffeta, Tweed

AQUARIUS
January 21st – February 19th

HUMANITARIUN UTILITARIUN – Does it have pockets? Where can I keep my iPod? What about my Swiss army knife? Oh and my camera in case someone needs help or I need to take a photo... Even though Aquarius likes to dress practically so she can carry around her many gadgets she still adds an oddball feminine touch. A stereotypical Aquarian outfit would like this: Cargo pants, heels, sexy off the shoulder sweater, big hoops and a leather messenger bag. Our Aquarius girl also has a thing for interesting sweaters; she likes asymmetrical shapes and super airy textured fabrics. She has the perfect combination of practical and feminine!

FABRICS – Merino Wool, Cotton Twill, Cotton Teflon
PISCES

February 19th–March 21st

THE SIXTH SEPARATES – Pisces has a sixth sense about fashion, she may not like that haram pant, but she saw it coming and she will know what to wear it with. This woman has a knack for separates in a casual airy way, even when it comes to a black tie event she will figure it out! For example: A lux black draped caftan, paired with a long loose jacket and fur collar tied on to finish. Chic sophisticated, airy and separate, or how about a meeting with finance department at her company? Pisces will pull together a long full skirt with flats, a long airy camisole and a cropped jacket. Tada! Always fashion forward and always very comfortable.

FABRICS – Brushed silk, Double Jersey, Bamboo

Birkins Ablaze

If you keep up with reality TV or the lives of the rich and useless then you heard about Clint Eastwood's daughter Francesca attacking a $100,000 Hermès Birkin handbag with a chainsaw before setting it on fire. It was all for art (thanks to Franny's avant-garde boyfriend), but the act offended many -- just think how far $100,000 can go in the real world.
Well, according to Hermès themselves, the act of burning Birkins may not be as silly as it sounds. Should an Hermes bag have a single fault, it meets an untimely demise in the burner. Perfection is a word synonymous with the pricey designer name, but does that mean they should create such waste due to minor imperfections? I understand not wanting one bad apple to spoil the whole bunch, but I'm ready to be forgiving. Please send reject bags to Hallae's Hide-out Home for Hermès Handbags.

Good ol' Vintage

People now a days are bringing back the old and make them feel new again. I must say clothes in earlier then 2000 were not that bad... I recently bought a red cardigan at Valu Village for $10 and it made half of the outfits in my closet look different. I can't lie though, It hurts to see good clothes have tough stains, not even the liquids we use to remove stains could take them out. You don't have to spend a lot of money for fashion, the local thrift store and a good eye is all you need. Anyways, at the end of the day, I spent around $50 and made a few new outfits look brand new again. The less money you spend, the more items you get. just saying' Also, if you love fancy 1950s furniture, its all there... How Vintage.

The fur coat used in this photo shoot was from a thrift store. fancy huh?

French Connection

Paris Vogue in English!? Mais Oui!!

I've been a fan of Paris Vogue for years. During my formative years I attended French schools. However after high school I neither spoke or read in French very often. And then by the grace of the Conde Nast gods, I discovered Paris Vogue. It gave me everything I needed to stay fluent in French, while simultaneously transporting me to a place that I dreamed about going. Europe! France! and most of all Paris!
That was quite a while ago now though, and I'm still a devoted Paris vogue reader. I live in a city where some European magazine issues are a month behind hitting the news stands. Sometimes I've gone as far as requesting current issues from friends when they are travelling somewhere where they can get it, on time! And whatever destination I'm headed to, I surely have a copy on hand as my go to reading. In short, I'm borderline obsessed.....
In the spirit of that. I HEREBY WELCOME ENGLISH SPEAKERS TO THE WORLD OF PARIS VOGUE!
Why is it so special? you ask. Simply put: There are some things in life you didn't know you were missing until you've tried it.. And Paris vogue is one of theses things.Readers are given the opportunity to sample life through the eyes of the modern Parisienne. The fashion editorials are somehow more racy but not raunchy, the articles and their content are keeping you abreast of Europe's talented and fabulous forays into fashion and most importantly it gives you a perspective on fashion that is uniquely Paris Vogue's.
The inaugural has "darling" Kate Moss on the cover sporting her colours. A fitting entry into the Anglophile realm...N'est ce pas?
The Internet has allowed us to break down many communication barriers, and this seems to be a logical step in broadening their readership. I wonder who will be next to follow suit? Until then, I'm about to peruse the site for the very first time..... YEAH!!!

Tangerine Dreams

Every year when spring rolls around I have a sudden overwhelming urge to go on anorange binge. So far I've dyed my Rag & Bone jeans orange, due to a nasty red sock in the laundry incident, I've been coveting the neon orange Cambridge Satchel and I pulled out my favourite Nars blush in Taj Mahal.
So when I ventured into Sephora to purchase my essentials,  I almost had a product-gasm when I saw Sephora and Pantone decided to make babies!
The entire line is incredible, from blushes, brushes, nail polishes to eye shadows, OH MY! The Sephora + Pantone Universe, Colour of the Year collection promises AND delivers the effect of a sun kissed glow months before I'm ready to give up Onion Dressing...
The shinning star of the collection as far as I'm concerned is TANGERINE TANGOcream lipstick. It goes on like silk and it's sheer-ish coverage let's you play with the impact of the colour. Put on a little and you look like maybe you've been having hot make-out session with an orange, add lipliner and gloss to the mix and you get a polished alternative to the classic red lip.
I still have a laundry list of orange spring acquisitions, but at least I can check off juicy kissable lips from my list!
You can check out the entire collection here Sephora+Pantone.

Straight Talking

Mane-Taming

Ever since I was a little girl, I've had an ongoing battle of taming my naturally curly hair. Ironing my hair on an ironing board, breaking brushes, hot combs so hot that you could see the smoke and hear the sizzle as soon as they touched my curls. I thought that I had tried it all with some to no success.
A couple of years ago, I thought that all of my prayers had been answered when I discovered "The Brazilian Blowout". The hype was totally right, it made my hair manageable, it straightened in half of the time and for once in my I could achieve "beachy waves" with the use of the right products. But then there there was all of the negative press about the treatment's active ingredients -Formaldehyde- being the major culprit. And it seems like the hair salons providing the treatment either went under ground, meaning you had to know someone who knows someone for salons to even admit to providing the service. Or the "new" safer treatments that apparently didn't contain formaldehyde just didn't cut the mustard.
Just when I thought all was lost.....
Enter, Bumble and Bumble's Concen- Straight SmoothingTreatment. No Formaldehyde,no Cysteine and no Lye.
I'm always on the lookout for stuff that can fix my frizz, and whenever I hit Sephora I always end up buying new products that claim to tame all sorts of hair types. So when I stumbled upon this self- proclaimed hair miracle in a bottle, I figured: Why the hell not?
I got it home and diligently read the instructions, and then I got all of the wind knocked out of my sails when they said: "For best results, wash hair first withBumble and Bumble Straight Shampoo. F**k!
So, I figured if I was going to try this miracle potion I might as well follow the directions to the letter to get the best results. Back to Sephora I go....
I read the instructions again and even go as far as watching the YouTube video:Sephora Presents: Concen-Straight.
I did everything by the book, and even skipped the gym. -sweat=curls-
Waiting the 24 hours to see the final results was like watching paint dry, I couldn't wait to hop into the shower and see how my hair was going to turn out. When the moment of truth arrived, I opted to let it air dry instead of taking a blow dryer to it so that I could see how tamed my curls really were.
And the verdict: THIS STUFF BLEW MY MIND!
My curls were much looser, defined and there was almost no frizz in sight. I added a little Kiel's Heat-Protective Silk Straightening Cream-which is the best stuff ever- just to seal the deal, and went on my merry way.
Spring weather is manic and a curly haired girl's worst nightmare, rain, humidity, crazy wind warnings. None of it affected my hair's new found composure.
My friend's noticed the difference almost immediately, and for once didn't get pissed off and even encouraged them to touch my hair! -Which I usually hate-
In short: I'm now going to be totally addicted to this DIY hair treatment, the only downside is skipping the gym to avoid sweating. Oh well, there's always tomorrow...

Make- Up Windfall at The Bay

Nars Attacks

I love to receive free stuff! Especially cosmetics and clothes. I was having a mediocre day and was trying to cheer myself up by hanging around the cosmetics area at The Hudson's Bay Company. I decided that I needed to add a little more colour into my life, and headed to the Nars counter.......My absolute favourite!
As the Nars counter girl and I chatted about the virtues of Nars' Spring /Summer offerings she pulled out a  little black bag with her companies' namesake.
"Don't tell anyone that I gave this to you." She said, as she slid it to me across the counter. "It's supposed to be a gift with purchases over $100. I took the little bag and almost started running, but not before thanking her for making my day......
I went and found myself a safe place to sit outside of the view of other Nars customers to examine my windfall.
The contents:
A gorgeous khol pencil
A miniature "orgasm" highlight stick
A matte powder
And a tiny sample of liquid foundation
ALL FOR FREE!

Style Your Inner Child

If you're a jewelry connoisseur, comme moi, then you've seen the multitude of necklaces covered in rainbow thread, or the sudden over-accessibility of neon-coloured rhinestone collars -- Tom Binns would be spinning in his grave, you know, if he were not alive. While I'm not necessarily jumping all over the trend (not shocking with my devotion to black) I like the idea of childhood whimsy behind it.
Rainbow thread brings me back to senior kindergarten when the coolest, most popular girl, Courtney, put rainbow thread in her running shoes and won all the boys' fancy and clearly some of the girls'. Now my most favourite pieces reflect my childhood from my satin cat print 'Duchesse' Miu Mius to my crystal Cinderella-esque Pradas and most recently my navy and white Bekket Isabel Marants that look identical to my first pair of Spice Girls-era platform sneakers. Kitties, Disney, and Girl Power -- my life as a little girl in a nutshell, now interpreted in high fashion.
Embrace your past and wear your inner-child on your neck. And maybe add a dinosaur, or two.

Lagerfeld creates £29,000 collar for jewelry show

klagerfeld-collar_v_15jun12_pr_b.jpg
Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has created what could be the most expensive collar in fashion history for a jewelry show, reported Vogue UK.

"I'm renowned for my love of a high collar and I wanted to create a true collector's item with this one-off piece," Lagerfeld told Vogue UK. "Merging the masculine with the feminine and uniting the world of fine jewellery and high fashion, to me this collar is a work of art and a real show-stopper."

Is there anything this man doesn't try? I don't know almost $70,000 dollars canadian for a collar, seems ridiculous but its the world of fashion everything seems ridiculous at a certain point.

Louis Vuitton loses lawsuit over knock-off handbag seen in "Hangover" film

hangover.jpg
Louis Vuitton loses case against the "hangover II" having a knockoff of their bag which was on  air for 30 seconds. 'Louis Vuitton claimed it was harmed by the misrepresentation and the resulting confusion to customers.

Louis Vuitton sought financial damages and a halt to further trademark infringement."

Honestly I understand that knockoffs are devaluing your brand, but for a judge to overrule something that was shown for only a blink of an eye, I don't think consumers had time to even interpret the bag to even be a bag.

Pavlyn Boutique

By: Y-Yen (Bambi) Nguyen

http://www.pavlyn.com
Online shopping today seems to be very popular and now a days everything we see on celebrities is available online, but most of them are based in the USA and we as Canadians have to deal with the shipping fee, paying additional costs when we receive our package etc.

I recently found this website via Twitter called Pavlyn Boutique. I was not sure what it was but hey I like shopping and I like online shopping so why not check it out. To my surprise it was a Canadian online shopping site that was started in 2011 by two best friends, Anna and Maria.
Founders of Pavlyn Boutique
Their website is easy to use and very easy to shop, you can shop by category, designer, celebrity, or the editors pick. They also have a style service that they provide which I find not a lot of online website have. What you is email them  what you are looking for providing as much detail as possible so they can help narrow down an outfit and picks for you.

I am absolutely in love with this website and love the brand that they carry.  For all you fashion and online shopping addicts should definitely check it out.

H&M to launch collection by Maison Martin Margiela

This year, the French fashion house Maison Martin Margiela is sharing their unconventional fashion framework with H&M!
"We will bring together the contrasting universes of the two houses in ways that will surprise all." Maison Martin Margiela said in a statement.
H&M said the Maison Martin Margiela collection, which includes accessories, will be sold online and in around 230 H&M stores worldwide from November 15, 2012.
H&M, launched in 1947 and now run by the grandson of its founder, has been struggling to cope with rising cotton prices and labour costs over the last couple of years and has been overtaken by arch-rival Inditex in terms of sales.
