Cartoon Style

Saturday morning cartoons played a huge part in my childhood. I woke up at the crack of dawn to absorb a solid six hours of animated goodness while I slurped what seemed to be endless amounts of cereal milk. I would spend the remainder of the afternoon playing in my own world of make believe. I wouldn't realize how influential these cartoon days were until my style evolved as a result of some of my favourite shows.

Exhibit A: Carmen Sandiego

I had this fascination with being a secret agent/spy as a child. I was always on some covert mission, writing messages in invisible ink and perfecting my dive roll to evade enemies. Carmen Sandiego fuelled this aspiration as well as my obsession with long locks, hats and jackets.

Exhibit B: Morticia Addams

At one point in my adolescence my father asked me, "Do you always have to wear blaack?". He would put this weird emphasis on the second syllable to make some point I have still ignored to this day. I loved wearing black. I could be harbouring a complete mess on my person without it being obvious. I have traced my personal justification of wearing all black, always, to Morticia Adams. In my eyes, she made black sexy and sultry in a dangerous black widow kind of way. Badass.

Exhibit C: Jem and the Holograms

These rockin fashionistas were awesome. It was this show that sparked the desire to have pink and purple hair much to my fathers dismay. And to start a rock band, even if we were playing air instruments.

Crashin' Fashion Week

As the fashion industry, as a whole, is constantly criticized for their subpar use of social media within marketing and advertising campaigns, American line Steve Madden is breaking away from the pack.

Along with Paper Magazine’s Mickey Boardman, Madden is launching the “Crashin’ Fashion Week” initiative, bringing New York Fashion Week to the masses. Through the use of social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Taxi TV, these vehicles will provide platforms to share runway shows, reviews, behind-the-scenes footage, as well as party gossip.

This follows in the footsteps of designer undertakings that involve the live streaming of runway shows in years past. Madden is taking his cues from Diane von Furstenberg, Narciso Rodriguez, and many others. “Social media is about democracy, and I’m all about bring fashion to the masses” Madden told AFP Relax News yesterday.

Expanding the number of media outlets from the two used since established last year, Madden hopes to continue the grown of “Crashin’ Fashion Week” in years to come.

Launching February 1st, coverage will continue for the duration of Fashion Week which concludes February 16th. Thanks Steve!

Eco-Fashion: Microfibres and Your Laundry

Stop. Wear the same outfit 3, 4 or even 5 times. Using an outfit once then tossing it in the laundry, it’s one of the latest dangers to the environment and ourselves. For every garment made of synthetic fabrics that is washed 1900 microfibres are released.

These microfibres are washing up upon coastlines around the world. A team of researchers took samples from 18 shorelines. Dr. Browne told BBC "We found that there was no sample from around the world that did not contain pieces of micro plastic." Microfibres have made it into the food chain, which could potentially be consumed and effect humans in the long run.

That means wearing clothing multiple times in different ways is saving the environment.Another way to stop releasing plastic microfibres is to wear clothing made out of natural fibres such as wool, cotton and silk. Incorporating these two habits into your life does not need to be a painful experience.

Heres some ideas on staying chic while being environmental friendly and shopping at your favourite retailers:

American Apparel, 100% Organic Baby Rib Cross-Back Summer Dress $43.00

American Apparel carries clothing pieces that are versatile to wear and made of natural fibres. They sell many different types of basics that can be dressed up or down.

H&M Conscious Collection, Organic Cotton Top
£14.99, Tencel Trousers £24.99

H&M has a conscious collection which uses Tencel, a biodegradable fibre. Clothing made from natural fibres can also be found in their other collections. Making H&M an easy way to be green and stay on budget.

Being green is a huge trend right now. It is likely your favourite retailer would carry clothing collections that would allow you to be environmental friendly and fashion forward.

The Hunger Games launches “Capitol Couture”

It appears The Hunger Games is marketing to the masses through their much-buzzed about fashion blog Capitol Couture. Capitol Couture, was launched by Lionsgate Entertainment, the company bringing The Hunger Games to us in theaters March 23rd. The first entry is written by Effie Trinket (played by Elizabeth Banks), District 12‘s fashionable escort, who will give fans the inside look at all things fashion and beauty within the novel’s setting of Capitol.

This movie is projected to be the next “Twilight” franchise of 2012. Everyone knows Twilight, it’s been in the media focus since 2008, focusing solely on vampires and Taylor Lautner’s abs, giving The Hunger Games every more reason to market themselves better than Twilight ever could. One thing “Twi-hards” have taught us is that when the movie hits theaters, they flood the web to consume anything and everything that was in connection with the movie, even the jacket Kristen Stewart wore in one of the pivoting scenes of Twilight was sold out in less than 24 hours all over the internet that sold the famous BB Dakota blue jacket.

Capitol Couture is capitalizing on this idea, offering a how-to-guide to perfect nails (using their branded China Glaze nail polish specially made for the release), sneak peeks at the clothes used in the film, and style tips on how to dress like your favourite character. It's probably the first branding tactic to come from Capitol Couture. Don't be surprised when the Hunger Games rolls around and fans are dressed in head to Capitol Couture styled dress.
