What exactly is a designer dog?
Originally, breeders crossed purebred
poodles with other purebred breeds. The
purpose was to obtain a dog with the poodle’s hypoallergenic coat, and other
desirable characteristics from the other purebred used. Once designer dogs gained in popularity,
other mixes were created. A designer dog
is not a breed, it is a hybrid.
Here are some types of designer dogs:
- Schnoodle (Schnauzer and poodle cross)
- Puggle (Pug and Beagle cross)
- Pomapoo (Pomeranian and Toy Poodle cross)
- Buggs (Boston Terrier and Pug cross)
- Labradoodle (Labrador and Poodle cross)
- Yorkipoo (Yorkie and Poodle cross)
- Bascottie (Basset Hound and Scottish Terrier cross)
- Bich-poo (Bichon Frise and Poodle cross)
- Peek-A-Pom (Pekingese and Pomeranian cross)
Today, my designer puppy turns one year
old!
Meet Ruxin, the Cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel x
Miniature Poodle). We took Ruxin home
on May 6,
2012, when
he was just 8 weeks old. He weighed
3.7lbs and I could hold him in my hand. He
had an excellent check-up with the vet, and is an office favorite.
At 1 year, he weighs 16lbs, and is more handsome
than ever!
XOXO
