Smooth, straight and glossy are the words that best characterize last season’s hair and makeup fashion trends. Hair was as high maintenance as ever and on the runways we witnessed a myriad of straight cuts, sharp edges and sleek ponytails. So too, faces were minimal. Faded eyebrows and barely visible skin were all the rage. Barely six months have gone by and it’s about to get a whole lot messier.
Up until recently, the understated look had women with long wavy tresses controlling them with straighteners and serums, and tracing their eyes with liquid liner. But now waves are again the fashion trend and longhaired ladies are back to using triple barrel wavers. If you want that 70’s big hair look, grip finger-length sections of hair and press into waves with your waiver. In order to polish off the look, spritz it all over with some shine spray. As for your eye makeup, forget the liquid liner and use a more delicate kohl instead.
Neat and short blunt crops are now fashion trend history. This season’s hairstyles are all about getting you back to products that will get hair textured. The mussed-up look is not at all difficult to achieve as long as short locks haven’t much grown out from last season. To finish it off, why not add some subtle highlights that will give you that beach party look.
One of this season’s more interesting developments is that colour blocking has now made the leap from wardrobes to hair and makeup. Block eye shadow in canary yellow, punchy pink or perfect purple is this season’s must wear. As for hair, 70’s fashion trends are all the rage. Big ponytails, for instance, are once more out on display, and tied with silk scarves in super-bright colours. If you’re blonde, you can try bold blues, but if you’re a brunette, go for a citrus orange or a leafy green scarf. So it’s clear that in 2011, the fashion trend isn’t just about the right look for your wardrobe, but it’s also about the right look for your face and hair.
