This past Saturday, and not for the first time, I realized how incredible the students and the faculty at the Academy of Design (AOD) really are. I was behind the scenes at the “Passion for Fashion” fashion show for the Creativ Festival being held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
The fashion show featured new designers currently attending AOD and past student’s collections as well. The pieces ranged from sleek and chic harem pants from Julie Hodge, to sophisticated power suits from Mary Wright, to body hugging leathers from Francesco Giovane and Ivana Abrahams, and to fairy-tale ball gowns by Cynthia Jordan.
The show was organized and directed by two IADT teachers, Keith Richardson and Robert Kennedy. Not only did they take every care in the world to ensure the show went off without a hitch, but the expression of pride on their faces could not be compared; a direct example of how much energy and experience they put in for their students.
Backstage was full of excitement, with some new talent from Toronto’s modeling industry, as well as some AOD students who also volunteered to strut the fabulous creations down the runway. A highlight of the evening was when Colour Theory teacher, Susan Anderson modeled designs by Ghada Jamil, Lynsey Bevington, Muhammad Alamir, Mary Wright, Lema Sharifi and Cynthia Jordan; although I was behind the stage I could hear the loud applause and enjoyment in the room.
The models had to make many quick changes, but the IADT students who volunteered as dressers made it easy and effortless. Overall, the show displayed the incredible talent of Toronto’s new designers, the passion of the IADT teachers, the enthusiasm of the IADT student volunteers and the simple fact that we should all take great pride in how successful the show was. Not too mention the fact that for the second year in a row we won the “Project Creativ Catwalk: where student design teams make fashion happen”, and will be doing the fashion show all over again next year!
