Trend Alert: MOD ABOUT YOU

Factory Girl is one of my favourite movies of all time- I absolutely love the mod look and I am so happy it’s popping up throughout the Spring 2013 trends. There is a dramatic feel to the 60s era and it’s fun to play it up. Here, I compare 5 of today's trends with Andy Warhol’s factory, as well as his infamous muse, Edie Sedgewick.

1.     Make-up

Edie Sedgewick was all about the exaggerated eyebrows and eyes, as well as ultra-nude lips. 

Model, Cara Delevigne, has bold eyebrows and eyes that really stand out against her pale, flawless face at the Marc Jacobs Spring 2013 runway show.

Another way to play on the trend is to create exaggerated eyes and bottom eyelashes in an electric hue- just like the model on the right at Moncler Gamme Rouge Spring 2013 runway.

2.     Stripes

Here, Edie is wearing a black and white striped shirt and if there is anything you should buy for this Spring, it is a striped item in contrasting colours.

 This is a similar top to Edie's and it's Marc by Marc Jacobs.

  

     The MSGM striped and voluminous pants are great if you’re more of a risk-taker.

      If you’re on the safe side, the Alice + Olivia Lucite box clutch is perfect for a night out. 

3.     Silver Chrome

The silver chrome colour is everywhere this upcoming Spring. It reminds me of Andy Warhol’s factory and the silver balloons in the movie, Factory Girl.

The Ela editor’s pouch is an affordable way to hop on this trend.

Just recently, blogger Danielle Berstein of We Wore What posted a picture of her chrome nails. I cannot wait to try this on my nails!

4.     Geometric shapes

Edie is pictured wearing geometric shapes- the ultimate mod look.

 Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2013 runway looks were all about geometric play in different colours.

For a more understated look, the Manolo Blahnik black and white checkered heel is a great option. 

5.     Statement earrings

A fun way to accessorize with the mod trend is to purchase statement earrings. They especially stand out against the 60s bob and Edie’s short, androgynous hair cut. 

The white Dannijo are sure to make a statement, as well as the gold Eddie Borgo Edie earrings below.

Must-Have Accessories for Spring 2013

So, I have rounded up my 5 favourite must-have accessory trends for the Spring season. It was a difficult choice, but these are fun, easy to find, and wearable.

1.     The Mini

I am obsessed with the mini handbag. It might be the cutest trend of the season and you can get a few in various colours. The Reed Krakoff micro boxer is my all time favourite- Not only do I love the electric blue colour (especially for Spring), but I also adore how it's structured. Below it, is the 3.1 Phillip Lim Mini Pashli Satchet. The top handle and snakeskin print are key selling points.

2.     Black and White

This trend is a given as everyone has been talking about it- black and white. You can play up the contrasting colours in either geometric shapes or stripes. I love the Celine calfskin slipper in the colour block. If you are feeling a bit edgier, the Nicholas Kirkwood striped block heel is sure to turn heads.

3.     Seeing Clearly

The clear plastic trend seems to be on everyone’s radar this Spring. A beautiful shoe is the Celine Optic Mule, made of shiny calfskin and smoked vinyl. Pair it with an all white suit and you’re the center of attention. If you don’t want to break the bank, I adore the Marc by Marc Jacobs clear top handle satchel. Just be sure to keep the inside of your bag clean, of course!

4.     Pastel Dream

Pastels are sticking with us for another season, which I am excited about. I love the blush Mulberry Alexa bag. It’s an iconic handbag and its more neutral colour gives you the opportunity to wear it at any time. The Alexander McQueen structured Heroine tote is beautiful and I find the pastel colour to be perfect.

5.     Stackin’ It

I have saved by favourite accessory trend for last- Stackin’ It. I have started following a blog called  Me and Lex, and the sister duo stack vintage and new necklaces above one another to create the look of a bib. I find it to be stunning and I cannot wait to try it for Spring. The bib necklace from Dannijo is a more subtle way of creating a stacked look- or if you’re loving the look...stack on!

Top 5 Street Style Picks from Paris Fashion Week 2013

As much as we all adore to see what designers have in store for us on the runways, I am always excited for what the attendees can do on the streets. Street style is all about fun and playing up with clothing accessories.

I look forward to Paris Fashion Week the most as it is the most chic city of all, of course.

Here are my top 5 street style photographs from Paris 2013.

1. Anna Dello Russo

Miss Anna Dello Russo always pushes the limits with her fashion choices and gives people an exciting reason to love the art of fashion. Here, she is rocking an oversize fedora from Saint Laurent- an essential piece for the upcoming Spring Season.

2.     Giovanna Battaglia

Giovanna Battaglia, editor of L’Uomo Vogue, is another one to dominate the streets of fashion with her distinctive look and style. She is always wearing something fresh. Her oversized and voluminious Rochas coat is simply stunning. It is an eye catching piece that is sure to turn heads.

3.     Veronika Heilbrunner and Justin O'Shea

Veronika, fashion editor for My Theresa, is wearing an Acne Studio jacket. The pair look fierce and chic. She is playing with the stripe trend and paired it perfectly with the black turtleneck underneath.

4. Leandra Medine

Leandra Medine, also known as Man Repeller (top fashion blogger) is one that I always look to for style. She is so effortless and has an edgy look. Leandra is playing it cool with her tuxedo suit underneath the multi-coloured fur jacket.

5.     Miroslava Duma

Lastly, we have the Queen of Street Style and Russian "It" girl, Miroslava Duma. She is a consistent favourite of mine on the streets of fashion. She knows exactly how to put together the most classic outfit, yet in a fun way.

Here, she is wearing a print on print (I love how the handbag is the same print as her jacket). The oversized jewelry is a great way to spice up any outfit.

Alberta Ferretti for Macy's Impulse

Just in time for warmer temperatures, the latest designer collaboration comes from the fabulous Alberta Ferretti and Macy’sdepartment store. Ferretti, most notable for dressing a-list celebrities such as Sandra Bullock, is an Italian fashion designer and stays true to her roots with this capsule collection.

The 30-piece collection is inspired by the Italian Amalfi Coast and will be sold at affordable prices, ranging from $49 to $119.

The collection was unveiled March 20^th at the Meatpacking District’s trendy hotspot Revel in New York City. It features everything from chunky knit sweaters and maxi dresses to floral prints and lace tops- all perfect for the steamy outdoors and the chilly air conditioned indoors.

According to an interview with Stylelist, the line seems to have been created on a personal note, as the designer says she “gave the collection my sense of style, emphasizing color and fantasy without ever losing the idea of “lightness”.

ollowing previous Macy’s collaborations with Doo.Ri and Karl Lagerfeld, this Impulse collection will be available in stores on April 17^th.

Seasonal Transitions

I would consider February the most exciting month of the year. Why you ask? Take a look around. What do you see? The disappearance of dark, dreary clothing, and the emergence of exciting, fresh, desirable, Spring merchandise. From coloured pants to cropped tops, to the most gorgeous florals, one can’t help but feel a ting of excitement when entering any fashion store. The problem is, the hideous weather continues, so although the spring clothing is readily available, we as consumers are not ready to purchase. Many people find it difficult to transition their wardrobe from Winter to Spring. It is such a large shift that combining both Winter clothing and Spring clothing may seem impossible to the average shopper, but, it is easier than you think.

There are techniques to begin incorporating your most exciting Spring pieces, while continuing to wear your neutral Winter clothing. Begin by pairing opaque black nylons and thigh high leather boots with a bright coloured, sleeveless, lightweight dress, and a black blazer. The bright colour introduces Spring, while the black nylons and blazer stay true to Winter hues. Don’t feel like bringing out the Spring dresses just yet? Try dark denim with a black long-sleeved blouse and a colourful, floral printed scarf. This outfit shouts “I love Winter!” with a hint of “I need Spring!” My favourite transitions technique has to be incorporating bright colours in the oddest places. Try pairing a black maxi dress with a neon orange cropped cardigan, a chunky pink necklace, and a pair of green sling-back suede wedges. This outfit will definitely make a statement, and ensure your audience that you are balancing two seasons, in the most fashionable way.
